Pakistan’s Monsoon Crisis: 57 Dead, 99 Injured in Flooding

Deadly monsoon rain has injured at least 99 people and killed 57 people in Pakistan since 26 June. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of continued monsoon rains, floods, and landslides has been given through July 5. Most of the fatalities were caused by floods, roof collapses, drowning, lightning strikes, electric shocks and landslides. NDMA said that the dead are 28 kids, 17 men and 12 women, and the injured are 39 kids, 33 men and 27 women.

The KPK has reported the most deaths of 22, followed by Punjab with 17 deaths, Sindh with 13 fatalities and Balochistan with five. Most injuries are recorded in Punjab, approximately 50, followed by 33 in Sindh, 11 in KP, three in AJK and two in Balochistan. According to the latest reports, the NDMA gave a warning of monsoon rain until July 5. They said one moderate rainfall with one or two heavy rainfalls will be expected in all the major rivers along with North and Northeast Punjab.

The authorities said that monsoon rain can create disturbances in hilly areas for transport, communication, and electricity infrastructure. The NDMA has advised to stay on high alert during this monsoon rain season, especially in mountain areas and low-lying areas. The citizens are urged not to visit tourist places and monitor weather conditions through the mobile app of the NDMA. The warning came after the deadly incident in Swat Valley in which 17 family members of a single family were drowned in the flood due to rising water levels. According to rescue officials, 12 bodies have been discovered since then, and search operations are ongoing for the rest of the bodies.

The slow emergency response by the Rescue teams has raised criticism on social media. As monsoon rain activities increased, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab issued an emergency to authorities in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur to prepare for possible flooding. The order by PDMA was issued on Tuesday, instructing district authorities and rescue teams to activate 24-hour emergency operation centres, patrol hilly areas, ban picnic places near the river and canal and prohibit swimming in canals.
